瓦尔齐亚

Constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries, this rock-cut monastic ensemble was established under the reign of Giorgi III and his daughter, Queen Tamar, both medieval monarchs. The complex served as both a religious center and a strategic fortress city, representing a significant example of medieval architecture. It is currently designated as a National Monument.

The site features a vast network of over 600 storage facilities, wine cellars, and cave dwellings connected by a strategic system of hidden passages and tunnels. The infrastructure includes a complex historical system of transitions carved directly into the rock face, designed for both habitation and defense.

At the heart of the complex lies the Church of the Assumption of Mary, also known as the Church of the Dormition, which houses significant historical frescoes and mural paintings. This religious hub is part of a larger array of churches and monastic spaces integrated into the cliffside. The site is open to the public.
