The structure is a fortified castle with origins dating between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is notable for being partly carved directly into the cliffside, with rooms, corridors, and staircases hewn from the natural stone. Throughout its history, the site was involved in the Hundred Years' War and experienced various sieges and peasant revolts before undergoing significant rebuilding. It has been classified as a historical monument since 1968.
The building now houses the National Museum of Prehistory. The interior displays extensive archaeological collections and prehistoric artifacts recovered from the surrounding Vézère Valley. As a national monument, the site preserves both its medieval defensive architecture and its role as a repository for regional archaeological heritage.
