This eleventh-century defensive structure, also known as the Moorish Gates, was a primary component of the city's military fortifications during the Arab occupation. The complex consists of a watchtower built over an archway that remains a major entrance to the upper town. The architecture reveals multiple historical layers, including original horseshoe arches from the Muslim period and later additions from the seventeenth century.
The tower houses the Núcleo da Cidade Muralhada e Centro Interpretativo, an interpretative center dedicated to the history of the medieval walled city and its defensive structures. Access is available to the top floor, which provides panoramic views of the inner city walls and urban development. The site is designated as a National Monument.
