Originally constructed in 1210 by the Frankish military, this Gothic castle was granted by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The current structure dates primarily to 1454, built under the direction of Louis de Magnac, the Commander of the site. His coat-of-arms remains visible, carved into the castle walls.
The site held significant strategic importance during the Middle Ages as a Crusader stronghold. Beyond its defensive purpose, the grounds contained large facilities dedicated to the production of sugar from local sugarcane, which was a primary export during this period. The site is open to the public, allowing for the exploration of its historical architecture and sugar production facilities.
Ownership of the fortress shifted due to rivalries within the Crusader Kingdom. The Knights Templar seized the castle in 1306, though it later returned to the control of the Hospitallers.
