Hai Van Pass

This 21-kilometer mountain pass traverses a spur of the Annamite Range along National Route 1. Known as the "Greatest Natural Barrier," the winding route reaches a summit that offers panoramic views of the ocean, the Son Tra peninsula, and the surrounding jungle-topped mountains. It serves as a natural boundary and weather divide between northern and southern regions.

The pass holds significant historical value, formerly serving as a boundary between the kingdoms of Champa and Đại Việt. At the summit, the Hải Vân Quan consists of historical remains from a Nguyen Dynasty-era lookout post. These strategic fortifications highlight the long-standing importance of the site as a defensive position and geographic marker.

The route is a notable destination for motorcycling and sightseeing. It remains open to the public as a scenic alternative to the modern tunnel system, allowing for travel through the steep terrain and coastal landscapes of the Bach Ma range.
