Dating back to the city's founding in 1144, this square served as the central point of the medieval bastide layout. Although established in the 12th century, the current structures were largely rebuilt in the 17th century following significant fires. Historically, the area functioned as a commercial and administrative hub, featuring a checkerboard design and an Italian architectural influence.

The square is characterized by uniform pink brick facades and distinctive double arcades dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. These arcades historically sheltered shops and administrative functions. As a protected national monument, the entire space is a pedestrian area paved with cobblestones.

The surrounding streets contain various boutiques and food shops, along with the ornate entrances of historical mansions. The square remains a central location for local events and continues to serve as a symbol of the city's architectural and social history.
