Originally constructed in 1262 by the Pannonhalma Benedictine Abbey, this fortress is situated on a volcanic hill 230 meters above the Tapolca basin. It served as a vital defensive structure during Ottoman incursions before its destruction in 1702. Today, the site consists of partially reconstructed ruins and remains a significant landmark undergoing ongoing restoration.
The fortress is open to the public and features several historical exhibitions. These displays, along with guided tours, cover the region's history from the Celtic and Roman eras through the Middle Ages. The site also hosts seasonal events and showcases medieval defensive architecture.
As the only castle on the shores of Lake Balaton open to the public, the location provides panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding Balaton Uplands. The hilltop position allows for a clear view of the region's historical landscape.
