Commissioned in 1461 by Sultan Mehmed II Fatih, also known as Mehmed the Conqueror, this structure is one of the oldest and most significant examples of Ottoman architecture in Eastern Europe. During the late 17th century, the building was briefly converted into a Catholic church before returning to its original function. It currently holds status as a protected cultural heritage site.
The building is the city's largest mosque and is defined by its monumental 15-meter dome. The interior is notable for its painted floral motifs, a carved wooden balcony, and hand-woven carpets. Intricately carved wooden elements throughout the structure highlight the craftsmanship of the period.
Located within the historic center, the mosque remains a landmark of Islamic architecture in Southeast Europe. Its preservation reflects its status as an iconic historical monument.
