Founded in 1263 by the Bohemian King Přemysl Otakar II, this former Cistercian abbey is a National Cultural Monument. The complex played a significant role in the historical transformation of the South Bohemian landscape until its dissolution in 1785. It remains one of the most important examples of medieval architecture in Central Europe.
The site showcases a blend of Gothic and Baroque styles. Key architectural elements include a large convent, a church, and a private abbot's chapel. Notable interior features include a Baroque pharmacy and the history of the Golden Crown Madonna.
The monastery is currently managed by the National Heritage Institute and is open to the public. Multiple guided tour routes are available, covering the spiritual spaces, monastic life, and the grand tour of the convent and church. The buildings also house a branch of the state scientific library and a memorial dedicated to South Bohemian literature.
