Considering how immensely popular bicycles are in Amsterdam, it's only natural that the first 'bicycle flat' - parking garage for bikes - would be built here. It was originally built as a temporary solution because of a nearby reconstruction, where all the regular bike stands had to be removed. This temporary solution turned out to be very popular, and the Bicycle Flat stands to this day.
