This Byzantine-era monastic complex is spread across three valleys and contains over 400 rock-cut structures. It served as a significant settlement and religious retreat for Christians between the 9th and 13th centuries. The site continued to be used as a Turkish village until the 1950s and 1960s, when inhabitants were relocated due to the risk of rockfalls. It was officially transformed into an open-air museum in 1967.
The architecture is carved directly into the soft tuff rock and includes early Christian churches, monasteries, and a rock-cut mosque. The landscape is characterized by unique geological formations known as fairy chimneys. Within the three valleys, there are also dovecotes, a tunnel, and numerous cave dwellings that showcase the transition from a religious center to a secular village.
Managed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the site is a protected archaeological area open to the public. It features historical rock-cut architecture ranging from the Roman period through to the mid-20th century. The complex remains one of the most extensive cave settlements in the region, containing a network of interconnected facilities used for both spiritual and domestic life.
