Chad’s landscape features a striking contrast between the vast, shallow waters of Lake Chad and the arid volcanic terrain of the Sahara. In the Ennedi Plateau and Borkou region, ancient meteorite impact sites like the Gweni-Fada and Aorounga craters mark the desert floor. The Ounianga lakes, including the hypersaline Lake Yoa and Lac Teli, represent a unique hydrological system sustained by fossil groundwater in one of the world's driest environments.
