Water Wonders of Guangxi

This collection highlights Guangxi's diverse water systems, from the trans-border Ban Gioc (Detian) Waterfall to Guilin’s historic Shan Lake, originally part of a Song Dynasty moat. The list includes extensive reservoirs like Qingshitan and Junshan, which serve irrigation and flood control while creating scenic landscapes. These sites span the region from the Ten Thousand Great Mountains to the karst valleys of Nandan, showcasing the engineering and natural beauty of South China’s aquatic resources.

Shanhu Lake

Located in central Guilin, this lake was originally a southern moat dug during the Song Dynasty. It is connected to Rong Lake by the Yang Bridge and is named for the cedar trees that line its banks.

Ban Gioc (Detian) waterfall

A massive transnational waterfall on the border of China and Vietnam. It is the largest waterfall in Asia and the fourth largest border waterfall in the world, fed by the Quay Son River.

Qingshitan Reservoir

A large-scale reservoir in Lingchuan County used for irrigation, power generation, and flood control. It features a main canal system stretching over 372 kilometers.

Junshan Reservoir

Completed in 1990 in Gongcheng County, this reservoir sits on the West River. It features a narrow, 103-million-cubic-meter body of water used for local irrigation and flood management.

Dakai Reservoir

Situated in the Longshan mountains at the junction of Guigang, Guiping, and Wuxuan, this multi-purpose reservoir provides irrigation and flood protection for the surrounding agricultural plains.

Jintian Reservoir

Built in 1976 on the Zijing River, a tributary of the Xun River. It has a storage capacity of 48 million cubic meters and serves the Guiping region.

Chashan Reservoir

A medium-sized reservoir in Mengshan County featuring a 60-meter-high masonry gravity dam. It was completed in 1978 at the mouth of the Chashan River.

Naban Reservoir

Also known as Jinyin Lake, this large reservoir in Shangsi County supports regional irrigation, hydroelectric power, and aquaculture.

Fengtinghe Reservoir

Located at the northern foot of the Shiwan Dashan mountains, this reservoir spans Nanning and Shangsi County. It was built for irrigation and flood control.

Xiyunjiang Reservoir

A reservoir in Nanning’s Xingning District, built in 1963 on the Xiyun River. It holds a capacity of approximately 34 million cubic meters.

Located in Nandan County, this reservoir features a 55-meter-high double-curvature concrete arch dam completed in 1974 on the Daniu River.
