Coastal Cliffs and Viewpoints
The Isle of Purbeck's coastline features a geological transition from the chalk ridges of Ballard Down to the Jurassic limestone cliffs near Worth Matravers. This selection includes Swyre Head, the peninsula's highest point at 208 meters, and former industrial sites like Winspit and Dancing Ledge, where Portland stone was once quarried and shipped directly from the sea. The route encompasses the Kimmeridge Clay formations at Hen Cliff and the distinctive Iron Age hillfort site at Worbarrow Tout, offering views across the English Channel and Poole Harbour.
Winspit
A former coastal limestone quarry featuring large man-made caverns and flat ledges used for loading stone onto ships. It is a frequent filming location for science fiction productions and a notable site for rock climbing.
Povington Hill
A prominent ridge in the Purbeck Hills overlooking the abandoned village of Tyneham. Situated within the Ministry of Defence Lulworth Ranges, public access is generally restricted to weekends and school holidays.
