Julian Alps Essentials
The Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia are anchored by Mount Triglav, the country's highest peak at 2,864 meters. This region features glacial lakes like Bled, home to an 11th-century cliffside castle, and Bohinj, the nation's largest permanent lake. Natural landmarks include the 1.6-kilometer Vintgar Gorge and the Soča River's emerald waters. Historical sites range from World War I remains in the Soča Valley to the Russian Chapel on the 50-hairpin Vršič Pass, while Planica serves as a global center for ski jumping.

Julian Alps Mountain Huts
The Julian Alps feature an extensive network of mountain huts, known locally as "koče," managed by the Alpine Association of Slovenia. These shelters range from high-altitude lodges like Kredarica, which serves as a year-round meteorological station, to valley-based cabins in the Soča and Tamar regions. They provide essential accommodation, local food, and weather protection for hikers traversing the Slovenian High Level Route and those summiting Mount Triglav.
