Wilderness Huts and Shelters

This collection features remote accommodations along the Kungsleden and surrounding Arctic trails in northern Sweden, Norway, and Finland. These sites range from full-service mountain stations with restaurants and saunas to basic, unstaffed wilderness shelters. Managed primarily by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) and Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), these huts provide critical refuge for hikers navigating the alpine terrain of Abisko, Kebnekaise, and the Three-Country Cairn area.

Abiskojaure Fjällstuga

Located within Abisko National Park, this STF hut is the first stop on the Kungsleden. It features a wood-fired sauna, a small grocery shop, and provides access to Lake Abiskojaure.

Tjäktja Fjällstuga

Situated near the highest point of the Kungsleden trail, this alpine hut offers essential shelter between Alesjaure and Sälka. It serves as a critical refuge during harsh weather near the Tjäktja Pass.

Låktatjåkkastugan

Sweden’s highest mountain lodge sits at 1,228 meters above sea level. It features a cafe famous for its waffles and offers overnight accommodation in a high-alpine environment.

Kebnekaise Restaurant

Part of the Kebnekaise Mountain Station, this restaurant provides full meal service for hikers and climbers attempting Sweden's highest peak.

Fjällstuga Vistas

Located at the intersection of three valleys, this hut is surrounded by birch forests and steep mountain walls. It offers a sauna and access to the Visttasjohka river.

Alesjaure Fjällstuga

One of the largest hut complexes on the Kungsleden, featuring a well-stocked convenience store and a wood-fired sauna overlooking the Alesjaure lake system.

Fjällstuga Nallo

A remote alpine hut situated at the foot of the pyramid-shaped Mount Nallo. It is known for its rugged surroundings and proximity to the high-alpine pass toward Sälka.

Sälka Fjällstuga

A central hub on the Kungsleden trail, this site includes multiple guest cabins, a sauna, and a small shop. It accepts credit cards and serves as a key junction for several hiking routes.

Pältsa Fjällstuga

The northernmost mountain hut managed by the STF, located in the remote Pältsa massif near the borders of Norway and Finland.

Pålnostugan

A basic wilderness cabin located near the northwestern shore of Lake Torneträsk, providing simple shelter along the trail toward the Norwegian border.

Tarfala

Located in a high-alpine valley surrounded by glaciers, this hut is adjacent to the Tarfala Research Station. It offers basic lodging and a sauna.

Kuohkimajärvi wilderness hut

A free, open wilderness hut (autiotupa) located near the Three-Country Cairn. It provides basic sleeping platforms and a wood stove for hikers.

Kuohkimajärvi varaustupa

A reservable, paid wilderness hut situated next to the free shelter near the Three-Country Cairn, offering guaranteed beds for a fee.

Unna Allakas Fjällstuga

Situated near the Norwegian border, these huts are located in an area with a rich history related to WWII courier routes. The site includes a sauna.

Stordalsstua

A Norwegian mountain hut (DNT) located in the Stordalen valley, providing a link between the Swedish border trails and the Norwegian coast.

Lappjordhytta

A DNT-managed cabin in Norway offering views of Lake Torneträsk and the surrounding Swedish mountains. It is a common stop on the Nordkalottruta trail.

Kårsavagge Fjällstuga

Located in a narrow glacial valley, this hut offers basic accommodation and a sauna. It is surrounded by steep cliffs and high-altitude lakes.

Wilderness Camp Väkäräjärvi

A remote wilderness camp providing basic cabin accommodation in the forested wetlands south of Kiruna.

Gappohytta

A Norwegian DNT hut located at the junction of trails leading to Sweden and Finland, situated in the shadow of the Barras mountain.
