Kyjov

Město · Jihomoravský kraj, 🇨🇿 Česko

Kyjov is a small town of about 10,600 people in South Moravia, set among vineyards at the heart of a region known as Kyjovsko, part of the wider Moravian Slovácko folklore area. It has kept a genuinely local character: hand-embroidered folk costumes still come out for festivals, family-run wine cellars line quiet streets, and the compact centre mixes Baroque and Renaissance buildings around a single main square.

The town works best as a slow, low-key base for exploring South Moravian wine country and nearby chateaux, rather than as a headline destination in its own right. Visitors who come for a night or two get an easy walk around the old centre, genuine local wine tasting, and — with a car — quick access to castles, a folk-architecture open-air museum, and rolling vineyard hills that see far fewer tourists than Mikulov or Lednice-Valtice.

Kdy navštívit

Spring and early autumn are mild and pleasant for walking the vineyards and the old centre; summers are warm and best for outdoor festivals, while winters are cold with occasional snow. Time a visit around the Martinský hody in mid-November, Kyjov's traditional St. Martin's Day folk festival, when locals parade in embroidered Slovácko costumes and wine cellars open the season's first young wine.

Hlavní památky

Kyjov's sights cluster tightly around one square, so the whole list is walkable in an afternoon.

Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is the town's dominant landmark, a late Baroque former Capuchin monastery church built between 1713 and 1720. Inside, look for the large altar painting and detailed stucco work.

On the main square, Kyjov Town Hall is a Renaissance building from 1561–1562 that still serves as the town hall. Right in front of it stands Marian Column, raised in the 1620s.

Kyjov Regional Museum occupies a small Renaissance manor and covers the history and folk traditions of the wider Kyjov and Slovácko area, including displays of local embroidered costumes.

For a quiet walk, Municipal Park is the town's green centrepiece, a short stroll from the square. Families should note Aqua v parku Kyjov, an aquapark with indoor and outdoor pools and a sauna area, and rail enthusiasts can seek out Kyjov Railway Museum, a small museum in a former signal box with a working model railway.

Co zažít

Kyjov's identity is built around wine and folk tradition, so the best things to do here are participatory, not just sights to photograph.

  • Walk one of the town's sklepní uličky (wine cellar lanes), where small family cellars open their doors for tastings of local Veltlínské zelené and Ryzlink wines, especially around harvest time.
  • Join the Martinský hody in November for the young-wine release and a procession of locals in traditional Slovácko folk costume.
  • Ask locally about Slovácký rok, a large multi-day folklore festival held in Kyjov every several years with costume parades, folk music, and dance from across the region — check dates before planning a trip around it, since it isn't annual.

Jednodenní výlety

Kyjov sits in easy reach of South Moravia's wine country and several strong castle day trips.

  • Milotice Chateau — about 15 minutes by car. A Baroque complex built on the site of a medieval water fortress, with a large French-style park, period-costume tours, and an orangery of Baroque sculpture — one of the region's finest chateaux.
  • Bzenec — about 20 minutes by car. A wine village known for its dry white wines and for the Bzenecká Doubrava, a pine forest and sand-dune area good for an easy walk or bike ride.
  • Strážnice — about 25 minutes by car or a short train ride. Home to an open-air museum of Moravian folk architecture and, in late June, the International Folklore Festival, one of the biggest folk events in Central Europe.
  • The Ždánický les natural park, bordering Kyjov to the north — good for hiking and cycling through rolling, lightly visited forest hills.
  • Uherské Hradiště — about 40 minutes by car or train. A bigger historic town and the unofficial capital of the Moravian wine country, with its own old centre and wine bars.

Jak se tam dostat

  • By air: the nearest airport is Brno–Tuřany (BRQ), about 50 km away, with limited scheduled service; most international travelers fly into Vienna Airport (VIE) or Prague and continue by train. From Brno, it's about an hour to Kyjov by train or car; from Vienna, allow roughly 2.5–3 hours door to door.
  • By train: Kyjov station sits on the regional line linking Brno with Veselí nad Moravou and Uherské Hradiště (the historic Vlárská dráha route), with direct trains to Brno in roughly an hour.
  • By bus: regional coaches connect Kyjov with Brno, Hodonín, and surrounding wine villages; useful for reaching smaller places the train doesn't serve.

Doprava na místě

  • On foot: the old centre is small and flat, and every top sight is within a 10–15 minute walk of the main square.
  • Public transit: local and regional buses run from the bus station near the centre; buy tickets from the driver for short local hops.
  • Car: renting a car is worth it for reaching the vineyards, wine cellars, and castles outside town — most are a short drive away but not practical without one.

Řízení auta

  • Is a car worth it?: not needed for the town centre itself, but very useful for reaching the surrounding wine villages, cellars, and castles, many of which have limited public transport.
  • Parking: free and metered spaces are available on and around the main square; a short walk from any of them covers the whole old centre.
  • Restrictions: none beyond normal town traffic rules — there's no congestion charge or low-emission zone here.

Jídlo a pití

Kyjov cooking is straightforward South Moravian fare: roast duck or pork with bread dumplings and cabbage, and savoury pastries called frgály during festival season. The real draw is the wine rather than any single restaurant — this is Veltlínské zelené and Ryzlink country, and a cellar tasting on one of the town's wine lanes is a better use of an evening than seeking out a specific address.

Bezpečnost a zdraví

Kyjov is a small, low-crime town, and visitors rarely encounter more than the odd bit of petty carelessness rather than actual crime. Standard precautions — watch bags at festivals and markets — are enough.

Historie

Kyjov's first written mention dates to 1126, making it one of the older towns in Moravia; it grew as a market town on trade routes through the region now known as Slovácko. Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Kyjov Town Hall on the main square both date from the town's 16th–18th century prosperity, when wine growing and craft trades built its wealth.

Kyjov also had a significant Jewish community from the 17th century onward, with its own synagogue and cemetery near the centre, until the community was destroyed in the Holocaust. The town's folk-costume and folklore traditions, still visible at the Martinský hody and the periodic Slovácký rok festival, were codified into their modern form in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of a wider Moravian folk-revival movement.
