Historic Churches & Chapels

Lääne-Viru County preserves a significant concentration of Estonia's medieval fortress churches and rural chapels. This collection spans from the 13th-century stone structures of Viru-Nigula and Haljala to the 20th-century functionalism of Tapa. Notable features include the defensive architecture of Kadrina, the maritime heritage of the wooden Käsmu church, and the 19th-century manor chapel at Ilumäe. These sites represent the region's transition from medieval Catholicism to Lutheranism and Russian Orthodoxy.
