Historic Theatres & Cinemas

Rome's performance history spans over two millennia, from the 1st-century BC Theatre of Marcellus and the chariot-racing track of Circus Maximus to contemporary stages. This collection includes significant archaeological sites like the Roman Republican temples of Largo di Torre Argentina and the well-preserved theatre at Ostia Antica. Modern venues are represented by the long-standing Teatro Olimpico and Teatro Parioli, alongside local cinematic hubs like the Stardust Village and EUR Cine.

Theatre of Marcellus

Ancient Roman open-air theatre ruins built around 13 BC, notable for its impressive architecture and historical significance. It served as a model for the Colosseum and is one of the best-preserved large stone theatres from antiquity.

Circus Maximus

Ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium and entertainment structure now preserved as an archaeological park with ruins and open grassy areas.

Theatre

Built during the Augustan age in the late 1st century BC, this ancient theatre was later expanded to hold 4,000 spectators. It remains a central landmark of the Ostia Antica archaeological site and still hosts open-air summer performances.

Olympic Theatre

Operating for more than 70 years, this theatre has become very popular mainly because of its dynamic dance performances.

Teatro Parioli

Established in 1938 in the Parioli district, this venue is a fixture of Roman culture, known for its diverse programming of prose theatre, concerts, and as the historic filming location for the Maurizio Costanzo Show.

Teatro Tendastrisce

Opened in 1977 as a massive tent-style venue, this theatre hosted major concerts, musicals, and circus acts for four decades. With a capacity for 3,500 people, it was one of Rome's largest indoor event spaces until 2017.
