Somiedo Essentials
Somiedo is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Cantabrian Mountains, characterized by deep glacial valleys and traditional Asturian architecture. This list highlights the Lagos de Saliencia and Lago del Valle, the largest natural lake in Asturias. It includes the 'teitos'—stone cabins with thatched roofs found in high-mountain pastures like Braña Sousas—and interpretation centers dedicated to the Cantabrian brown bear, which maintains one of its last wild populations in these rugged landscapes.
Lago del Valle
The largest natural lake in Asturias, situated at 1,580 meters within a glacial cirque. It features a small central island and is accessible via a popular hiking trail from the village of Valle de Lago.
Lago de La Cueva
Part of the Lagos de Saliencia glacial complex, this lake is distinguished by the reddish hue of its surrounding terrain, a legacy of former iron mining activities in the area.
Braña Sousas o Tabladiello / Braña Tabladiellu
A traditional high-mountain pasture containing several 'teitos,' which are ancient stone huts with broom-thatched roofs used by shepherds. The site is located at the head of a glacial valley.
Centro de Interpretación Somiedo y el Oso
A museum and information center focused on the biology, conservation, and habitat of the Cantabrian brown bear, featuring educational displays and interactive exhibits.
Mirador Principe de Asturias
An elevated vantage point near the village of Aguino providing panoramic views of the Somiedo valley and the surrounding limestone massifs.
Lago Cerveriz
One of the high-altitude Lagos de Saliencia, this glacial lake is set within a limestone basin and surrounded by alpine meadows used for summer grazing.
Lago Almagrera o La Mina
The smallest of the Saliencia lakes, located near an old iron mine. This shallow glacial pool is seasonal and often dries up during the summer months.
Mirador del Rey
A mountain viewpoint offering wide vistas of the rugged peaks and deep forested valleys that define the Somiedo Natural Park landscape.
Centro de Interpretación Parque Natural de Somiedo
The primary visitor center for the park, providing maps, route information, and an exhibition detailing the area's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status and traditional rural life.
Pola de Somiedo
The administrative capital of the Somiedo municipality, this village serves as the main hub for services, accommodation, and trailheads for the surrounding natural park.
