Historic Castles & Manors

The South Downs landscape features a dense concentration of English heritage, spanning medieval fortifications and refined country estates. This selection highlights the defensive architecture of Arundel and Lewes Castles alongside the ruins of Wolvesey Castle. It also includes significant residential history, from the 16th-century cottage of Virginia Woolf at Monk’s House to the grand Neoclassical and Gothic designs of Castle Goring. These sites illustrate the region's evolution from Norman military strongholds to the landscaped gardens and manor houses of the Hampshire and Sussex countryside.
