Southern Sri Lanka Highlights

Southern Sri Lanka features a diverse array of heritage and natural sites, from the primary tropical rainforest of Sinharaja to the 17th-century Katuwana Dutch Fort. The region is home to unique geological phenomena like the Hummanaya Blow Hole and traditional practices such as stilt fishing. Visitors can explore the manual moonstone mines of Meetiyagoda, the architectural legacy of Geoffrey Bawa at Lunuganga, and vital conservation projects protecting sea turtles and coral reefs.

Sinharaja Conservation Centre

A UNESCO World Heritage site and the country's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest. It is a global biodiversity hotspot containing a high density of endemic species, particularly birds, trees, and amphibians.

Hummanaya Blow Hole

The only known blowhole in Sri Lanka and considered the second largest in the world. It produces a natural fountain as sea water is forced through a submerged cavern and up a rock fissure.

Kushtarajagala Statue

A 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist statue carved into a rock face in Weligama. The figure is widely believed to represent the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, though local legend associates it with a foreign king.

Katuwana Dutch Fort

A 17th-century inland fort constructed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It served as a strategic defensive outpost to protect the coastal districts from the Kandyan Kingdom.

Jeffry bawa's garden

Also known as Lunuganga, this was the country estate of architect Geoffrey Bawa. The gardens feature a blend of Italian Renaissance elements, English landscaping, and traditional Sri Lankan aesthetics.

Big Standing Buddha

Located at the Wewurukannala Vihara temple, this site features a massive Buddha statue and a series of halls filled with life-sized figures depicting Buddhist stories and graphic scenes of the afterlife.

Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project

A community-based project dedicated to protecting five species of endangered sea turtles. The facility operates a hatchery to safeguard eggs from predators and human activity until they are ready for release.

Moonstone Mines

Traditional mines in Meetiyagoda where moonstones are extracted by hand from shafts lined with coconut timber. It is one of the few places globally where these semi-precious stones are found.

Blue Beach Island

A small island connected to the mainland by a narrow tombolo, or sandbar, near Nilwella. It is characterized by clear waters and is a popular site for snorkeling and camping.

Hikkaduwa Coral Reaf

A shallow fringing reef within a marine national park. The reef system supports over 60 species of hard coral and diverse tropical fish, accessible via glass-bottom boats or snorkeling.

Ridiyagama Safari Park

A 500-acre open-air zoological park featuring a drive-through safari. The park is divided into zones for African lions, Bengal tigers, and various herbivores like Sri Lankan elephants and deer.

Stick Fishing

A traditional Sri Lankan fishing method where fishermen balance on a crossbar tied to a vertical pole driven into the seabed. This unique practice is primarily found along the southern coast between Unawatuna and Weligama.
