The reserve encompasses approximately 12,200 hectares of tropical rainforest and is centered on a 500-meter-high mountain plateau. It borders the Brokopondo Reservoir, with several viewpoints offering views of the water from the heights. As the most visited protected area in the country, the landscape is primarily Guianan moist forest and serves as a significant site for scientific research on neotropical wildlife and forest degradation.
A network of trails facilitates exploration of the rainforest terrain, leading to various waterfalls throughout the park. These paths allow for the observation of the area's rich biodiversity, which includes numerous bird species, diverse flora, and medium-to-large terrestrial mammals.
The park is open to the public for nature tourism and ecotourism. In addition to its recreational use, the area is a subject of environmental study regarding the impacts of human infrastructure and artisanal small-scale mining on wildlife populations and forest degradation.
