Established in 1969, this protected area encompasses a significant coastal stretch at the mouth of the Marowijne River. It is managed by the Suriname Forest Service in coordination with STINASU, which facilitates educational and research activities. The reserve is located within the ancestral territory of the Kalinya indigenous people.
The area serves as a critical nesting site for four species of sea turtles, most notably the Leatherback and Green Sea Turtles. Its ecosystem consists of a combination of beaches, dense jungle, and coastal mangroves, providing a remote habitat for various local wildlife.
The site is open for the observation of nesting turtles and wildlife in a natural environment. It also serves as a location for studies on biodiversity conservation, polycentric governance, and community-based environmental management.
