Colossus of San Carlo

The Colossus of San Carlo is a massive copper and bronze statue standing approximately 35 meters tall. Completed in 1698 based on designs by Giovanni Battista Crespi and executed by Bernardo Falconi, the monument commemorates Saint Charles Borromeo. It is historically significant as one of the first known examples of a large-scale statue that allows for entry into its interior.

The structure consists of a hammered copper shell supported by an internal iron frame. Its design was a primary inspiration for the Statue of Liberty. The interior features a series of stairs allowing for an ascent to the head. Small openings in the eyes and ears provide unique perspectives of the surrounding landscape, while the park grounds offer views of Lake Maggiore.

Recognized as a National Monument, the site functions as a religious and historical museum. At the time of its completion in the late 17th century, it was the tallest visitable statue in the world. The complex includes a surrounding park and forms part of a larger historical and architectural ensemble.
