This 14th-century fortress, built by the Della Scala family (the medieval lords of Verona), is a rare example of a lakeside fortification. The structure is entirely surrounded by water and features defensive walls, towers, and characteristic swallowtail battlements. It serves as the primary access point to the historic town center.
The castle contains a unique internal dock, which represents the only surviving example of a 14th-century fortified port. A 47-meter-high keep stands within the complex, providing panoramic views of the area. The site occupies an area of approximately 4,630 square meters and is designated as a National Monument.
The complex functions as a museum and remains open to the public, offering a well-preserved look at medieval military architecture.
