West Azarbaijan Province houses a dense concentration of Iran's most significant archaeological sites, spanning from the Neolithic era to the Safavid dynasty. This selection includes UNESCO-listed landmarks like the Sassanid-era Azar Goshnasp Fire Temple at Takht-e Soleyman and the ancient Armenian Monastery of Saint Thaddeus. The list also features the Urartian fortress of Bastam, prehistoric settlements at Hasanlu and Hajji Firuz Tepe, and Silk Road infrastructure such as the Ghotour Shah Abbassi Caravanserai.

تپه باستانی اهرنجان

A prehistoric settlement in Salmas dating back to the 7th millennium BC. Excavations have revealed obsidian tools and pottery, indicating it was an early center for lithic production and trade in northwestern Iran.

Meteor crater

A massive natural sinkhole located near the border town of Bazargan. Often locally referred to as a meteor crater, this deep geological formation is situated near the village of Kandi.

One of the three Great Fires of Zoroastrianism, this Sassanid-era temple is located within the Takht-e Soleyman UNESCO World Heritage site. It served as the primary sanctuary for the empire’s warrior class and royalty.

Also known as Qara Kelisa, this UNESCO-listed Armenian monastery dates back to the 1st century AD. The current structure features intricate stone reliefs and unique contrasting black and white masonry from different reconstruction periods.

Ghotour Shah Abbassi Caravanserai

A Safavid-era stone caravanserai located on the historical trade route between Khoy and Turkey. It provided security and lodging for merchants and travelers crossing the mountainous Ghotour region.
