Originally an Arab watchtower, this 12th-century Norman fortress was fortified by Matteo Bonello. It is one of Italy's largest and best-preserved castles, situated on a cliff overlooking the San Leonardo River Valley and the Rosmarina artificial lake. The structure evolved from a defensive stronghold into a stately palace through various modifications during the Aragonese and Spanish periods. Key architectural elements include V-shaped battlements, a moat, and several majestic towers.
The interior contains frescoed halls and specialized museums. A museum of ancient arms and a collection of historical costumes are housed within the building. One of the most significant rooms is the Sala della Congiura, the site of the Conspiracy of 1160, where Norman barons plotted against William I of Sicily, the King of Sicily.
The castle is associated with legends of ghosts and hidden treasures. As a designated Cultural Heritage Site, it serves as a military museum and historical park. The site is open to the public for exploration of its medieval heritage and historical rooms.
