Everything about this place is marked by history, from the colourful, strange houses or the cobblestone on the pavement to the royal guards, which walk through every day at noon in a ceremonial march, headed to the royal palace. Take a stroll here, marvel at the busy atmosphere, enhanced by various street performers, or do your shopping in one of the quaint small stores around.
Fittingly called the Old Town, this is the oldest part of the city. Standing here, you are looking around the place, where Stockholm was founded in the 13th century. You may even be walking around some of the very same houses as stood here back then, since the district is exceptionally well-preserved, too.
The quarter is very popular, so if you want to enjoy its historic atmosphere in a crowd-free way, visit during low season. This way, you may even find yourself alone while strolling through the cobblestone streets. Also keep in mind, that due to the area's popularity with tourists, some shops may be a bit overpriced, so check the prices carefully.
