This 19th-century military fortification was constructed between 1840 and 1849 on the site of a 17th-century wooden fort. Overlooking the mouth of the Mahury River, it was designed to protect the region from colonial rivals and local tribes. The structure is built from dark basalt rock and is surrounded by a moat. It is classified as a Monument Historique.
The site contains remnants of barracks, a prison, and artillery emplacements. It also features casemated cells within its defensive walls. The fortress is occasionally open to the public for educational visits.
