Commissioned by the conqueror Timur (also known as Tamerlane) following his campaign in India, this 15th-century congregational mosque was built starting around 1399. Considered a masterpiece of the Timurid Renaissance, it originally stood as one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world. The structure reflects the architectural grandeur of the Silk Road era and currently serves as a branch of the Samarkand State Museum-Reserve.
The mosque is architecturally significant for its Azari style, featuring a massive scale that includes an impressive portal and iconic turquoise tiled domes. The exterior and interior are adorned with intricate tilework. While the original construction was completed in the early 15th century, the monument underwent extensive restoration efforts during the late 20th century to preserve its historical features.
As a prominent historical landmark and Cultural Heritage Site, the mosque is open to the public as a museum and monument. The site is notable for its massive scale and its status as a significant symbol of regional cultural heritage.
