Established on January 1, 2000, this protected area is one of four national parks. It is characterized by unique sandstone formations, forest-rock landscapes, and diverse habitats. The park borders the Sächsische Schweiz National Park, forming a significant cross-border natural area.

The Pravčická brána serves as the symbol of the park and is the largest natural stone bridge in Europe. Other notable geographical features include the Elbe Canyon and the gorges of the Kamenice River. The landscape consists of extensive forests, canyons, and rock formations.

The area contains various historical monuments and provides infrastructure for hiking and cycling.
