Waterkant

As the oldest and most important street in the city, this area is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The waterfront along the Suriname River is characterized by its monumental colonial wooden architecture and the presence of numerous governmental buildings.

The district features a newly redeveloped boulevard, public squares, and markets. A variety of food stalls, bars, and restaurants provide an atmospheric setting for evening walks. The area also serves as a central hub for river transport.

Major city landmarks are located nearby, including the St Peter and Paul Cathedral. This 19th-century Gothic-Roman structure is the largest wooden building in the country. It is notable for its yellow and grey exterior and an interior of intricate cedar wood carved by the Maroon community.
