These flat-bottomed wooden vessels were originally designed without a keel to navigate the shallow and fast-moving waters of the Douro River. Their primary function was the transportation of Port wine barrels from the quintas (wine estates) in the Douro Valley to the cellars in the coastal cities.
The boats feature a distinct construction with a single mast carrying a square sail. This design allowed them to carry heavy cargo while managing the river's unique currents. While they are no longer used for commercial wine transport, many remain moored along the riverbanks as historical icons.
Today, the vessels are primarily utilized for river cruises and recreational activities. They are also the centerpiece of the annual São João regatta, a traditional boat race held during the Festa de São João do Porto.
