This coastal settlement developed around a Norman castle constructed in 1076 atop the remains of a Byzantine fortification. Situated on a cliff overlooking the sea, the castle now functions as a museum. The town saw significant growth following the 1169 eruption of Mount Etna.
Historical and natural sites include a Greco-Hellenistic necropolis and the Isola Lachea and Faraglioni dei Ciclopi reserves. The district of Aci Trezza features a beach and the offshore Cyclopean Islands, which provided the setting for the 1948 film La Terra Trema by director Luchino Visconti.
