Completed in 1894 and designed by architect Peter Boisen, this neo-Renaissance and neo-classical building serves as a significant cultural venue. It is distinguished by its remarkably well-preserved original 19th-century stage machinery and a unique collection of historical backdrops, making it one of only two such theaters remaining in Sweden. The site is designated as a Cultural Heritage Site.
The theater hosts a diverse range of performances, including opera, dance, concerts, and children's theater. It serves as the venue for the annual Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival and other events such as operettas and stand-up comedy. With an annual attendance of approximately 45,000, the building also provides space for private events and artistic productions.
