The castle dates back to the 12th century and was originally built by the barons of Beynac, a line of local lords. Perched on a limestone cliff, it served as a crucial strategic point for controlling the river and surrounding territories. During the Hundred Years' War, the fortress functioned as a significant stronghold and was once held by Richard Cœur de Lion.

The site is characterized by its austere architecture, which includes a Romanesque keep, ancient donjon, and attached residences. The interior contains state rooms, an oratory, and monumental halls that have been preserved over centuries. The fortress is surrounded by well-preserved ramparts and features a terrace with panoramic views of the valley.

The castle is open for exploration of its medieval structures and history. The location has also served as a filming site for various historical movies. Ownership has transitioned through several notable families throughout its nearly 1000-year history.
