The museum is located within the Villa Ajavon, a historic building constructed in the Afro-Brazilian style. It opened on November 11, 2013, as part of the Fondation Zinsou, a cultural institution established in 2005 by Marie-Cécile Zinsou to promote contemporary art from the African continent.
