This volcanic caldera is situated at the summit of the Central Volcano. The landscape is defined by an interior lagoon and volcanic cones, which are noted for their resemblance to the nine islands of the Azores.
Designated as a Special Protection Area, the site has been recognized as a protected area since 2004. It serves as a primary geosite, preserving unique geological formations and the volcanic heritage of the island.
The area features a circular hiking trail and serves as the starting point for the PR2COR hiking trail. This route offers scenic views of the island and the crater's interior, and it includes a path leading down to the village of Vila do Corvo.
