Brighton Bathing Boxes

The site consists of a row of 82 to 93 uniform timber beach huts originally constructed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These structures functioned as changing rooms intended to maintain the modesty of bathers. Characterized by Victorian architecture, the huts are notable for their vibrant and varied paint schemes, which present a range of artistic variations along the shoreline.

As a heritage-listed cultural asset, the area is managed by the Bayside City Council under a plan that balances tourism with heritage preservation and environmental protection. The precinct remains a functional remnant of seaside history and a significant example of 19th-century coastal architecture.

The beach huts are accessible to the public throughout the year. The site experiences high traffic with over one million annual visits, which leads to ongoing challenges regarding parking availability and traffic flow for large tour buses.
