This large freshwater body is situated on the Altiplano plateau at an elevation of 3,821 meters, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. It is the largest lake in South America and is classified as a monomictic mountain lake. As a designated Ramsar site, the lake supports unique biodiversity and specialized aquatic species within its high-altitude ecosystem.
The area holds deep historical significance for Andean civilizations and remains central to the heritage of local Indigenous groups. Several notable islands are located within the lake, including Isla del Sol and Taquile, which are known for their cultural history. The floating islands, manually constructed and inhabited by the Uros people, are a prominent feature of the lake.
