The fountain features a vertical water jet that reaches a height of 140 meters. It is situated at the point where Lake Geneva flows into the Rhône River and is recognized as a major emblem of the city. The site is accessible via a stone jetty and a mobile footbridge.
The structure was established in the late 19th century, with its origins dating to 1885 when it served as a safety valve for a hydraulic power station. It was later moved to its current position and inaugurated as a landmark in 1891.
