Founded by the Sufi saint Ahmadou Bamba in 1887 and completed in 1963, this mosque is the spiritual heart of the Mouride Brotherhood. It houses the mausoleum of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and serves as the primary destination for the annual Grand Magal pilgrimage. It is recognized as one of the most visited Islamic pilgrimage sites in the region.
The structure is characterized by its monumental Islamic and Arabic architecture. The mosque covers an area of 8,790 square meters and has a maximum capacity of approximately 7,000 people. It features several imposing minarets, including a central tower that reaches a height of 86.8 meters.
Recognized as a Cultural Heritage Site, the building is the largest in the city and one of the most significant religious monuments on the continent. The mosque is accessible and serves as a central landmark of religious history.
