Inaugurated in 1435 after construction began around 1287, this national shrine is the largest cathedral in the Nordic countries. Built in the Brick Gothic architectural style, the structure reaches a height of 118.7 meters. Historically, the site served as the coronation site for numerous Swedish monarchs and remains a significant cultural and spiritual landmark.
The cathedral is the final resting place for several notable historical figures. These include Gustav Vasa (the King of Sweden who established the modern Swedish state), Carolus Linnaeus (the world-renowned botanist and zoologist), and Emanuel Swedenborg (the scientist and theologian).
As an active Lutheran cathedral, the building hosts regular services, concerts, and cultural exhibitions. Guided tours are available to provide insight into its history as a place of sanctuary and worship over seven centuries.
