Mahabalipuram Monuments

The group of monuments dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries, representing a collection of religious architecture from the Pallava dynasty, a South Indian dynasty. The site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and showcases early stone-carving traditions. The complex comprises a variety of structures including rock-cut cave temples, monolithic rathas (chariots), and structural temples.

Notable features include the Descent of the Ganges, an intricate open-air bas-relief carved into rock, and the Shore Temple. The monolithic rathas are carved from single blocks of stone to resemble chariots. These works demonstrate the craftsmanship and historical techniques of the period.

The complex is open to the public and functions as an archaeological site and temple complex.
