This historic gurdwara complex, which dates back to 1589, features a sanctum sanctorum covered in gold leaf. The architecture is defined by its distinctive golden dome and its position in the center of a sacred pool called the Amrit Sarovar, which serves as a site for meditation and spiritual reflection.
As the pre-eminent spiritual site of Sikhism, the complex functions as an open house of worship for people of all religions. A community kitchen, or langar, operates on-site and provides meals to all individuals without discrimination. The site also acts as the headquarters for the apex governing body of Sikh Gurdwaras worldwide.
The spiritual life of the complex includes daily prayers and the reading of the Mukhwak (hymn) from the Guru Granth Sahib. The site is open to the public and serves as a major center for religious study and spiritual guidance.
