Established in 1220 by Chinggis Khaan, this site served as the capital of the Mongol Empire between 1235 and 1260. It was a major political and cultural center that also functioned as the capital for the Uighur Empire. The location is situated within the Orkhon Valley, which holds status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The archaeological site includes the ruins of the ancient capital and the site of the former Khan palace. It is located in close proximity to the historic Erdene Zuu monastery, one of the most significant religious structures in the region. Archaeological findings provide insight into the urban planning and architectural heritage of the imperial period.

The site is currently part of a revitalization project aimed at preserving its national history, cultural heritage, and nomadic civilization. It remains open to the public as an archaeological monument and historical landmark. The area is being developed to maintain its significance as a symbol of the nation while protecting its historical integrity.
