Established in 1986, this 150-square-mile tropical forest reserve is recognized as the world's first jaguar preserve. Managed by the Belize Audubon Society, the sanctuary protects approximately 400 square kilometers of ecosystems, including river basins and tropical forest habitats on the slopes of the Maya Mountains.
The landscape includes the Victoria Peak mountain range and various waterfalls. The sanctuary serves as a critical habitat for wildlife and a site for ongoing research while also holding significance regarding Maya history. Collaboration with local groups, such as the Maya Center Women’s Group, supports the management and maintenance of the site.
An extensive system of hiking trails traverses the diverse terrain, facilitating birdwatching and access to the mountain ridges. The reserve is open to the public, with a network of paths spanning the forest and river basins.
