The building is the oldest preserved monument of its kind, with its origins dating back to around 1300. It was originally constructed as part of a commandery belonging to the Order of Teutonic Knights. Architecturally, the structure is significant as one of the oldest early Gothic churches in Europe and is designated as a Cultural Heritage Site.
Following centuries of use as a storage facility and sustaining damage during World War II, the building underwent extensive reconstruction between 1993 and 2000. It was reopened to the public in 2000.
The interior is currently managed as part of the Regional Museum. The space is open for tours and serves as a venue for museum exhibitions and musical concerts.
