This 18th-century Baroque chapel, also known as the Santuário Diocesano de Nossa Senhora da Paz, was reconstructed in 1764 on the site of a 1522 original. The complex is defined by a monumental staircase added in 1968, featuring 100 steps and 10 landings decorated with ornate blue and white tiles. These tiles depict scenes from the Passion Cycle and the life of Jesus Christ, reminiscent of the staircase at Bom Jesus do Monte. The site is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público and remains an active pilgrimage site rooted in a legend of a Virgin Mary apparition.
The chapel's elevated position on a hilltop offers panoramic views of the southern coastline and the Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo. The grounds include floral arrangements and religious imagery throughout the ascent to the sanctuary. The site is open to the public and combines architectural heritage with its function as a scenic viewpoint.
